Onions do not like cold and moisture

Bringing food from the store or market and immediately putting it in the fridge is almost a reflex for most of us. But in fact, not everything is well preserved in such conditions. For example, do you know how to store onions properly? Refrigerator will be the wrong answer.

According to the Express, due to the low temperature, the starch in the product turns into sugar, which causes the bulbs to lose their elasticity and become soft. In addition, high humidity in the refrigerator can provoke the development of mold.

Food storage experts say that onions can be perfectly stored for up to six months if you put them in a dark, cool, and dry place with good air circulation. So a garage or basement would be a good place. In a city apartment, the vegetable can stay fresh and juicy for quite a long time if you put it in a cupboard. However, the cupboard should be as far away from heating appliances as possible. This includes stoves and ovens, radiators, underfloor heating, etc. Onions can begin to sprout in the heat.

Moreover, the bulbs must be properly packaged before storage. Thus, do not store them in sealed plastic as the inside of the bag will be too humid. It is better to choose paper bags or boxes or baskets with ventilation holes in the walls. Cloth bags and nets are also suitable as they allow air to circulate freely around the fruit.

Another important condition for effective storage of onions is the absence of direct sunlight. It provokes the germination of the bulbs and leads to their decay.

How to store chopped, cooked and green onions

In addition to the whole, unpeeled bulbs, it is sometimes necessary to preserve them in other forms. Here's the best way to do it:

  • store green onions in an airtight container or bag in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator for up to 5 days;
  • store raw chopped onions in an airtight container or bag in the refrigerator. It is also important to make sure that the packaging is odor-proof, otherwise, other foods will absorb the smell of onions, so chopped onions can be stored for 7-10 days;
  • store boiled onions in an airtight container for 4 days.

If you want to store raw onions in the freezer, peel them, cut them into slices, and put them in a freezer bag. In this form, the product will be suitable for consumption for 8 months.
