The Oscar-winning brunette could have played Barbie, but it didn't work out: now she's happy and praises Margot Robbie

Oscar-winning American actress Anne Hathaway had the opportunity to play the lead role in the movie Barbie. The celebrity has been trying on the image of the doll since July 2017, but the movie was not released.

Now Anne is happy that Margot Robbie took her place. She spoke about this in more detail in a new interview for the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actress believes that she was very lucky that the movie starring her was never made, Entertainment Weekly writes.

"I think Margot [Robbie] is just wonderful. I'm not just saying that! Just as a moviegoer and a woman in Hollywood since childhood, I'm thrilled with her development," Anne said enthusiastically.

Calling Robbie "majestic," Hathaway praised the actress, adding that she was "thrilled" that the film helped to overcome stereotypical narratives and barriers for "so many people," the publication noted.

Sony originally planned to create its own Barbie film in 2017, with Juno creator Diablo Cody among the screenwriting team, and the lead role was originally intended for Pretty Woman actress Amy Schumer. But the latter turned down the role because of the planned filming, so Hathaway was supposed to be Barbie. Unfortunately, the project didn't materialize, so the rights to the film were transferred to Worner Bros. and they began shooting a new film starring Margot Robbie.

"[Margot Robbie's performance] brought the whole world to such a level of ecstasy! And now imagine this version [with Anne Hathaway]... so much energy, so much anticipation, so much emotion... but it's not the right version. In fact, I think it's a lucky thing [that it wasn't made]," Anne Hathaway said.

It is worth noting that the movie Barbie became the highest-grossing movie in 2023. It attracted almost 1.5 billion dollars.
