Lys Assia has participated in the song show three times
The first Eurovision Song Contest took place on May 24, 1956, in the Swiss city of Lugano at the famous Coursaal Theatre. The winner of the show was a 32-year-old representative of the host country, Rosa-Mina Schärer, better known by her pseudonym Lys Assia. Back then, only 7 countries took part in the show - the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Italy.
Unlike the usual format of the contest, in the first Eurovision Song Contest, each participating country presented 2 songs at once. Assia sang "Das alte Karussell" and "Refrain", the latter of which brought her first place. Rosa-Mina was born on March 3, 1924 in Rupperswil, Switzerland. The beauty began her career as a dancer, but in 1940, the celebrity took to the stage as a singer. After the end of the Second World War, Assia was known to everyone in France and Germany. Interestingly, the woman took part in the Eurovision Song Contest three times, but it was the first time that she was successful.
In 1963, at the age of 39, Schärer married a Dane named Pedersen. The man owned several hotels and asked his beloved to help him with his business. After that, the brunette had to forget about her activities. After his death in 1995, the artist returned to the big stage. In 2007, she won the Swiss Grand Prix der Volksmusik competition.
Lys Assia spent her last years in the French city of Cannes. The woman had no children. Before her death, the singer was seriously ill and bequeathed her dwarf dachshund dog to her friends to take care of her. The singer died on 24 March 2018 at the age of 95.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, this year will be the 67th Eurovision Song Contest. The first semi-final of the show will take place on May 9. It will feature 15 singers. In total, representatives from 37 countries will gather in Liverpool this year.
