Savelyeva criticized the IOC
World and European boxing champion Yelena Savelyeva called the conditions for Russian athletes to participate in international competitions humiliating. She opposed the participation of her compatriots in the 2024 Olympics in Paris under a neutral flag and without the national anthem.
Savelyeva said this in a commentary to the RIA Novosti propaganda news agency. The 39-year-old native of Tula, who has fought only six fights (5-1, 4 KOs) in the professional ring, complained about the "depersonalization of our athletes."
"I can only speak for myself in this situation. I would certainly not have participated. This decision was made because of my attitude to what has been happening lately and because of the attitude of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) towards Russia. For me, this is a humiliation of our country and a depersonalization of our athletes. Even a possible victory at the Games will not be the same as it would have been under different conditions. But every athlete's situation is different," Savelyeva said.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Russia's suspension from international competitions one of the manifestations of "perversion of the Olympic movement" that "was propagated by the Anglo-Saxons and other NATO members." She also stated that "the world has one last chance to save world sport."
