Boxing coach from Samoa Lionel Elika Fatupaito died during the Olympic Games in Paris, the International Boxing Association (IBA) announced on Saturday. According to Reuters, the fatal tragedy occurred in the Olympic Village.
According to CBS News, Fatupaito suffered a heart attack. Medical workers who were nearby tried to provide him with first aid, but were unable to resuscitate the specialist.
Fatupaito, who was 60 years old, was to train ethnic Pole Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali, the only Samoan boxer competing in the 2024 Olympics. The two-time Pacific Games champion will meet Belgian Victor Schelstrate on Sunday.
"We at the IBA extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Lionel Elika Fatupaito, Samoa's national boxing coach, who tragically passed away during the 2024 Paris Games," the IBA said in a statement.
"Lionel's dedication and passion for the sport left an indelible mark on the boxing community. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Samoa team and all those affected by this heavy loss," the obituary reads.
Olympic boxing competitions will take place at the North Paris Arena and Roland Garros from July 27 to August 10.
