Ukrainian ice cream is gaining more and more fans around the world, as evidenced by the growing exports of this product. In particular, in 2023, sales of the dessert abroad reached a record high, with the largest amount of Ukrainian ice cream exported to Moldova and various countries of the European Union (EU).

According to the Ukrainian Agrarian Export Association (UAEA), in 2023, Ukrainian producers sold almost 10 thousand tons of ice cream on foreign markets, which is 44% more than in the previous year. At the same time, their total revenue increased by 67% and exceeded $32 million. Both figures were the highest since Ukraine's independence.

In January-March, Ukraine exported 2 thousand tons of ice cream, which is almost a quarter higher than last year. Profit for the first quarter of 2024 amounted to $7 million.

Where is Ukrainian ice cream most popular?

The countries where Ukrainian ice cream was purchased the most include:

  • Moldova (2301 tons);
  • Germany (1909 tons);
  • Poland (1873 tons);
  • Israel (963 tons);
  • Lithuania (509 tons);
  • Czech Republic (425 tons).

Overall, most of the ice cream was sold in the EU – the profit earned from this export destination reached $19 million (60% of the total). However, the geography of sales of the frozen dessert is quite diversified – it is also exported to Iraq, the United States, China, the UAE, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Canada, and other countries. This strengthens Ukraine's position in the global ice cream market.

In the first quarter of 2024, specialized exporters also received most of their revenues (about 60%) from Germany, Poland, and Moldova.

"The Ukrainian Agrarian Export Association states that along with the positive dynamics of our ice cream exports and the developed geography of foreign sales, it is worth further developing its potential, considering, in particular, traditional importing countries, including Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. This product has a pronounced seasonality of peak production and consumption, but optimal coverage of buyers in different regions of the world will help to equalize the frequency of foreign exchange earnings," the UAEA noted.
