Russians increasingly have to use domestic perfumes and colognes. Over the past year, the supply of imported perfume to the aggressor country has fallen by a third.

According to the Russian media, from January to June, imports of perfume to Russia fell by 6.5% compared to the same period in 2023, to 23.3 million bottles. Compared to May 2023, the drop was 33.8% (3.83 million items). Imports decreased in all categories:

  • cologne – six times (to 8 thousand units);
  • perfumes – by 56% (to 372 thousand bottles);
  • eau de toilette – by 12.5% (to 939 thousand);
  • eau de parfum – by 20.1% (to 2.4 million).

The perfume crisis in the Russian Federation began to escalate after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. A year later, the situation eased a bit, as attempts were made to replace the supply of products from the EU and the UK with new brands from "Kremlin-friendly" countries: China, Turkey, India, and the Middle East. However, such perfumes failed to take a significant share of the Russian market.

At the same time, sales of perfume products in general are falling in Russia: in the first half of the year, they decreased by 3% year-on-year. In June, the number of purchases of perfumes and cosmetics continued to fall and decreased by 9% year-on-year.

Analysts attribute this to rising prices: the average check in this category grew by 13% to RUB 4.1 thousand over the year. In addition, retailers were unable to offer an analog to the popular items of well-known perfume brands.
