Katya Chilly responded to accusations of anti-Semitism and pointed to a "flaw" in Ukrainians
Ukrainian singer Katya Chilly, known for her hit song "Above the Clouds," responded to online hate speech over anti-Semitism. The day before, the singer expressed her opinion on the installation of a symbol of Jewish Christmas – the largest Hanukkah in Europe – on Independence Square in Kyiv. At the time, she stated that there should be no symbols of "other" nations in the center of the country.
She substantiated her opinion on Facebook, noting that we should not be tolerant of "outsiders" because no one treats Ukrainians like that. The singer also named the main "flaw" of the people – the lack of unity and cherishing of their own.
"I raised the issue of protecting our statehood through symbols. I am glad that now many people know that the Christmas symbols of Ukraine are the didukh and the Christmas caroling star, and the trident is still the national symbol of our country," Katya told Chilly.
She also posed six questions that are not easy to answer, but they supposedly need to be discussed as a matter of priority, as opposed to "intolerance of Jews" and the cherishing of their traditions. Here is a quote:
- "Why is there so much land in the hands of the MPs and this is not a problem in the 3rd year of the full-scale invasion?
- Why is the redemption of historically and sacredly significant sites (Busha, Trakhtemyriv) for mining purposes during the war going on?
- Why does the systematic construction of historically significant sites continue?
- Why is land being sold during the war?
- The issue of closing the Department of Folklore Studies, which was raised after 2014, and whose graduates Ukraine is relying on now, because it is about identification.
- The law on multicitizenship when our men are dying.
The artist asked a rhetorical question about tolerating the culture of "other nations" and explained that these are allegedly actions to make Ukrainians forget about their identity, because "at the moment of exhaustion, it will not matter. The mechanism will not resist for lack of strength."
"All the tolerance you defend was given to you by the shining star of the Ukrainian Christmas and the trident. It is time to protect them. Otherwise, you will forget about this word," Katya Chilly urged.
She added that Ukrainians need, first of all, to preserve their traditions in order not to fall into the same trap again, when other states tried to destroy national identity.
"Not only the dead need heroes. But each of us can be a chip in their burning, a stone in their beating, or a nail on their crucifixion. Ukraine has stumbled over this more than once. We do not know how to work on our mistakes. But those who want Ukraine do. And he does not change his strategy. You can love Ukraine, or you can just want it, you know the difference," the singer said.
