We would gladly accept two British warships planned to be decommissioned - Ukrainian Navy

Ukraine would gladly accept two ships that the UK wants to write off

The Ukrainian Navy would gladly accept two British ships, HMS Argyll and HMS Westminster. These vessels may be decommissioned by the Royal Navy ahead of schedule.

The statement was made by the Commander of the Ukrainian Navy Oleksii Neizhpapa in an interview with Sky News. It was published on January 27.

The Vice Admiral said that Ukraine needs warships "because we understand that without ships there is no Navy."

"Therefore, if such a decision regarding the possibility of transferring two frigates to the Ukrainian Navy is made, we will be very happy about it," he said.

The frigates HMS Argyll and the recently repaired HMS Westminster may be decommissioned in 2024. The reason is the lack of maintenance personnel. The sailors working on these ships may be redirected to a new class of frigates.

HMS Argyll is the oldest operating British Type 23 Duke frigate in the Royal Navy. It was launched in 1989. The ship was scheduled to be decommissioned in 2023.

HMS Westminster is a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate that was launched in 1992. In October 2022, it began a scheduled two-year overhaul with the intention of extending its service life to 2028-2029. However, in May 2023, it was reported that the repairs were suspended due to the ship's poor material condition.
