Ukraine to receive over $240 million and demining equipment: details
Ukraine will receive $244 million from its partners for humanitarian demining. In addition, relevant machinery and equipment will be transferred.
This was announced on 25 July by First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko. According to her, the government is working to increase the capacity of government agencies and engage organisations and businesses in mine action.
In particular, agreements have already been reached with the Croatian company DOK-ING and the Danish company Hydrema to localise production in Ukraine.
According to Svyrydenko, by the end of the year, Kyiv will receive 10 "much-needed" DOK-ING demining machines, another 10 machines from Global Clearance Solutions, nearly 200 pyrotechnic machines, more than 600 metal detectors, 50 demolition machines, individual demining kits, explosive protective suits, quadcopters, and robotic systems for the disposal of ammunition.
The US, EU, Japan, Germany, the UK, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Denmark, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Korea, and the Howard Buffett Foundation will provide a total of $244 million for demining.
"We are also working on launching a demining market and creating a mine action strategy - in fact, the main document that will shape policy in this area," the Vice Prime Minister said.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL:
- The Washington Post called Ukraine "the most mined country in the world". Some experts estimate that if 500 demining teams were to carry out humanitarian demining, the process would take 757 years. About 30% of the country needs long, expensive and dangerous operations.
- Lithuania announced the creation of a coalition for demining Ukraine. It will consolidate and coordinate current and planned assistance in this area.
