Reznikov proposes to change the constitution and allow foreign military bases in Ukraine

Reznikov believes that the norm of the Constitution on preventing the location of foreign military bases is outdated

Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov proposes to change one of the norms of the constitution to allow the deployment of foreign military bases in our country. He believes that this is a necessary step towards Euro-Atlantic integration.

The minister wrote about this in a column titled "To NATO without emotions. What we got at the summit in Vilnius", posted on LIGA.net. Reznikov believes that the norm of the Constitution on the inadmissibility of the location of foreign military bases is outdated.

"It is clear that if necessary, you can find a legal formula not to call the base a base, like a "center of interaction and exchange of experience" or something. But why? It is necessary to remove this restriction that has lost its relevance in order to destroy the ground for speculation," Defence Minister argues.

In addition, he proposes to supplement Article 17, which refers to the protection of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The minister believes that it should be supplemented with the thesis that Ukraine independently chooses mechanisms to ensure its security. In particular, by joining international treaties or organizations.

"This will disclose and normalize the idea of the European and Euro-Atlantic course, laid down in paragraph 5 of the preamble," the head of the Defense Ministry explaines.

By the way, Reznikov held a telephone conversation with the head of the Pentagon Lloyd Austin, in which he discussed the priorities of the virtual meeting of the contact group on defense of Ukraine. The Pentagon chief briefed the Ukrainian minister on U.S. security assistance efforts and Minister Reznikov provided an update on developments on the ground in Ukraine, according to the U.S. Department of Defense website.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, Reznikov said that the coalition to train Ukrainian pilots of F-16 fighter jets has already been fully established. The process itself will begin in late July - early August this year. The first 20 pilots will be trained.
