At the request of our country's leadership, a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council was held. The topic of the meeting was the massive missile attacks by Russian invaders on Ukrainian cities and, accordingly, the need to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.

This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umerov spoke in more detail about the meeting via video link.

"Two days ago, the terrorist state launched more than 200 missiles and drones into Ukraine, killing innocent people and destroying critical infrastructure. I informed our partners about the current situation. We discussed further plans to supply air defense systems and missiles to them. We need to strengthen our air defense," Umerov said.

According to him, consultations continue, including in bilateral formats, "on the creation of an air defense shield, the so-called security belt over the western regions of the state."

"I am grateful to our allies for the promised assistance. More and more allies support the lifting of restrictions on the use of long-range weapons for Ukraine's self-defense within the framework of international law," the Defense Minister added.

Neither Umerov nor Zelenskyy said what kind of assistance the partners promised.

The NATO-Ukraine Council is a body that coordinates relations between Ukraine and the North Atlantic Alliance. It was established at the Vilnius Summit in 2023.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, on August 26, Russia launched at least 230 strikes against Ukraine. According to Volodymyr Zelensky, "our defense system worked, but nevertheless, there was serious damage to the power system."

The Ukrainian government clarified that Russia had attacked Ukrainian energy facilities with cluster munitions, and this was the first time it had done so. The Russians targeted Ukrainian distribution substations.
