Kakhaber Kaladze, the legendary former Dynamo Kyiv footballer who won the mayoral election in Tbilisi for the second time last October, believes that Georgia will only harm itself if it joins sanctions against Russia. Kaladze is convinced that the ban on the shipment of goods to Russia from Georgia is completely absurd.

Kaladze defended the colours of the capital's club from 1998 to 2000, playing in 71 matches and scoring 6 goals.

"We are being attacked for not joining the sanctions. I want to ask any sane person. If Georgian wine and Georgian agricultural products do not enter the Russian market, will we destroy the Russian economy by doing so? It's completely absurd," Sputnik Georgia quoted Kakhaber as saying.

According to the 45-year-old ex-defender, the sanctions will only harm his country and working citizens.

"Those who work 24 hours a day to earn a piece of bread. Why do we need to close these opportunities for people? Opportunities to work, sell their products and get money. After all, this money is still coming to Georgia," Kaladze said.
