"Genius move": former champion said what really happened in the Usyk-Dubois fight
Carl Frampton (28-3, 16 KOs), a former lightweight champion of the world who now works as a boxing expert for TNT Sports Box Office, commented on the scandalous situation in the fight between IBF/WBO/WBA heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) and Daniel Dubois (19-1, 18 KOs). The referee did not count the British punch between Usyk's legs in the 5th round, giving the Ukrainian 5 minutes to recover.
36-year-old Frampton believes that the Ukrainian was just taking time to rest. The expert does not doubt that the punch was legitimate, and if the referee had opened the count, Usyk would have gotten up.
"Usyk just used this experience and sat down because he was hurt. This is not a criticism of Usyk, it's a pretty brilliant move: if you need rest, you rest, but I still think the punch was legitimate. But if the referee would have started the count, he would have stood up," boxingsocial quoted Frampton as saying.
At the same time, Frampton hasn't changed his opinion that Dubois' punch was within the rules.
"There were a few rumors about how the fight ended and people criticizing Daniel, as well as a lot of talk about whether it was legal or illegal. I have already said that Daniel Dubois should have become world champion because the punch was legal. I still think so," Carl said.
Despite that, Frampton questioned Dubois' ability to win the fight if Usyk had gotten up.
"Would Daniel have done enough to win? I'm not entirely sure," the British former champion summarized.
As OBOZREVATEL reported earlier, video evidence of Dubois hitting Usyk below the belt on purpose appeared online.
Later, catman Russ Anber, who once worked with Oleksandr Usyk, came to the Sky Sports studio, where he analyzed this episode in the Ukrainian's fight, citing the undeniable facts of foul play.
As a reminder, the Usyk-Dubois fight ended in the 9th round when the Briton missed a heavy shot to the head. In total, Daniel missed 88 punches to the body and head from the Ukrainian.
