Denys Boreiko, an international master of sports in fencing, gave his life for Ukraine in the battle against the Russian occupiers. The junior lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a well-known Dnipro coach died on 3 July 2023. The athlete and defender was 34 years old.

Boreiko was a champion of Ukraine in fencing, a prize-winner of the World and European Junior Championships, and an international master of sports. After his active career, Denys became one of the founders and the first coach of the Liberte Fencing Club in Dnipro.

Since the first days of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Boreiko has been helping the Ukrainian military and the territorial defence of Dnipro. And in March 2022, the athlete and coach voluntarily joined the country's defence forces, swapping his sports weapon for a combat weapon.

For almost 16 months, Boreiko defended Ukraine and his family from the Russian invaders, but on 3 July 2023, the 34-year-old mentor was killed...

"War takes the best! Bright, kind, sincere and brave. Denys was a wonderful person," said his friend Olena Pozdnyakova, reacting to the coach's death.

The funeral will take place on 13 July at the Krasnopilsk Cemetery in Dnipro.

Earlier, OBOZREVATEL reported that the former footballer, who was reported missing, died under fire. The life of the Lviv Karpaty player was cut short by an enemy artillery shell. The athlete and defender is now 37 years old.

We also told you that a Kyiv-based climber who recently became a father was killed in a battle with the occupiers. He held off enemy fire for 15 minutes, which allowed 17 of his comrades to return from the mission alive.

And the 19-year-old athlete sacrificed himself, leading his comrades out of the encirclement. The young water polo player from Kharkiv was a soldier of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine's Kraken special unit with the call sign "Chief". And during his last battle, he helped evacuate his wounded comrades from under enemy fire.
