"The better half is here now". Russia has declared its greatness in biathlon and become a laughingstock
Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev said that the world's best biathletes (Russian and Belarusian national teams) are currently competing in the Fittest Cup in Raubichi, Belarus, while the World Cup is taking place in Switzerland. His words caused a wave of irony online.
Degtyarev again expressed his dissatisfaction with the position of the International Biathlon Union (IBU), which does not allow Russian athletes to participate in international competitions.
"Our champions who are competing in Raubichi now could potentially all be world champions. The best half of biathlon is here now," the minister said in an interview with Match TV.
However, netizens did not leave this statement without sarcasm. "Then why do you ask the weakest, the worst half in such a boring and undignified way? Enjoy yourselves. Relax and have fun. Just like in a sauna," one commenter wrote.
Others ridiculed attempts to present the Fittest Cup as a prestigious tournament: "How many gold medals did these fittest win at the last games?" or "If the best half is here, what are you so worried about? Let the weaklings run in the World Cup."
Some people even suggested that the minister hadn't watched biathlon for many years: "Who told you that? Did he watch the 2011 biathlon broadcast?" or "Did he watch biathlon at all?
