Scandal of the day. At the Australian Open, what is happening in Ukraine was called a "little war"

British journalist Candy Reid, while commenting on the Australian Open 2024 match between Ukrainian Marta Kostiuk (WTA No. 37) and Russian Maria Timofeeva (WTA No. 170) on the Eurosport TV channel, made an inappropriate characterization of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The 47-year-old CNN commentator, who played tennis at the junior level, referred to Timofeeva as a representative of "a country that is now engaged in a small war."

This incident occurred at the beginning of the match when Marta refused to take a photo with the Russian tennis player.

Later, in comments on social media, Reid apologized for her words, stating that it was "a great irony."

As previously reported by OBOZ.UA, Kostiuk vs. Timofeeva ended with a score of 6:2, 6:1. For the 21-year-old from Kyiv, this was a record achievement in her career, and Kostiuk also became the youngest Ukrainian tennis player to reach the quarterfinals of the AO.

After Marta's victory, the official US Open account posted a Russian flag in front of Maria Timofeeva's name on its social media.
