Daria Kasatkina talks to British journalists

Russian number one Daria Kasatkina gave a lengthy interview to the British newspaper The Times, where she openly condemned her country's attack on Ukraine. The 26-year-old native of Togliatti was not afraid that her family and friends in Russia might get into trouble after she said that.

It is the fear for their relatives that has justified the silence of most Russian athletes who allegedly do not support the war in Ukraine but do not want to talk about it.

Recalling the situation with the ban last year, Kasatkina could not contain her emotions.

"It was hard, but to be honest, I was just grateful that we were able to play all the other tournaments on the WTA tour. It's hard because you feel like you're being punished for something I didn't do and for the actions of my country that I personally don't agree with, but they don't make exceptions," Daria was quoted as saying by BTU.

It should be noted that, apart from Kasatkina, only a few Russian athletes have spoken out against the current regime. These include former Russian national football team captain Igor Denisov, Russia's best footballer Nadia Karpova and Russia's best chess player Yan Nepomnyashchy.
