Alisher Usmanov has voluntarily suspended his duties as president

Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov has voluntarily resigned as president of the International Fencing Federation (FIE). According to the FIE press service, the interim president will be Emanuel Katsiadakis, a member of the Greek executive committee.

Usmanov had been heading the organization since 2008, but on March 1, 2022, he temporarily stepped down for the first time due to EU sanctions. Nevertheless, on November 30, 2024, he was re-elected president of the federation.

On December 1, the FIE executive committee announced that Usmanov had decided to suspend his powers again. This decision is allegedly due to the desire to ensure the stable operation of the federation without affecting its interests due to the sanctions imposed on him.

Usmanov's representative emphasized that the businessman "will act within the law to protect the FIE from legally unjustified restrictions".

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Usmanov's election as FIE chairman drew sharp criticism from the famous Ukrainian fencer Olga Harlan. The experienced athlete noted that representatives of many countries that had previously been in solidarity with Ukraine betrayed our country by supporting the candidacy of the Russian representative.

Earlier, Harlan admitted that the FIH was doing dastardly things trying to get athletes from Russia and Belarus back to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. To do this, the organization's leadership postponed qualifying competitions, breaking the calendar and framing representatives of Ukraine and other countries.

On March 10, the FIE became the first to allow representatives of the Russian Federation and Belarus to participate in international tournaments. This caused an angry reaction in the world, and many countries refused to participate or hold competitions under the auspices of the organization. In addition, at the Grand Prix in South Korea, the FIE banned the symbols of Ukraine.

Former Russian sports minister Pavel Kolobkov called the nomination and subsequent appointment of oligarch Alisher Usmanov as a gift to the FIE.
