The head of the Russian Football Union (RFU), Alexander Dyukov, has said that in 2025 the Russian national football team may play against European teams. According to him, friendly matches are scheduled for March and June, and the opponents may include representatives of Europe. However, he did not name any specific teams, which sparked a heated discussion among users.

Since its suspension from FIFA and UEFA tournaments in 2022, the Russian national team under Valery Karpin has been playing only friendly matches. Of the 13 games played, only two were against European teams-Serbia and Belarus. Both matches ended in a confident 4-0 victory for the Russians.

Users took Dyukov's words with irony. One commentator noted that Belarus was mentioned as a European team, hinting at the lack of serious rivals.

Others joked about the possibility of playing against "teams from Jupiter's moon Europe" or even teams from Antarctica.

Some suggested that the list of "loyal" countries, such as Turkey, Hungary, or Slovakia, might shrink. Some wondered whether these national teams were aware of the RFU's plans. There was also criticism of the Russian football leadership for its years-long statements about returning to the "big game" amid isolation.
