Emelianenko speaks out about MMA fighters from Russia

The legendary mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Fedor Emelianenko suddenly went against the Kremlin's narratives of Russian greatness. The Russian ridiculed athletes who can only win awards at competitions in the aggressor country.

Emelianenko said this in an interview with the Ushatayka YouTube channel. According to the four-time MMA world champion, fighters can only confirm their truly high status "on foreign territory," which can achieve real recognition not only in Russia but also around the world.

"I've always said it and I tell the guys that fighting at home is fine... You need to win on someone else's territory. If you are a champion on someone else's territory, it will be a real recognition. And if you're a home champion... When all our television is shouting that we're the best, the strongest, and then our champion turns out to be a fake when he goes abroad. I think it's still more prestigious to be a champion abroad," Emelianenko said.

Earlier, the Russian fighter volunteered to fight former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion Francis Ngannou under boxing rules. Emelianenko had his last fight in February last year, when he lost by technical knockout to American Ryan Bader in a fight for the Bellator championship.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko mentioned God in every sentence and supported the war in Ukraine.
