"Only Russians do this." What Usyk did puzzled Ukrainians
WBA, WBO, WBC, and IBO world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk congratulated Ukrainians on the upcoming Christmas, despite the fact that the holiday was celebrated on December 25 according to the new calendar. On July 27, 2023, the Local Council of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) finally approved the transition to the New Julian calendar.
On September 1, 2023, the calendar reform of the OCU officially came into force, according to which believers celebrate important church dates earlier. Only the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate celebrates Christmas according to the old calendar (January 7).
"Christmas has already come, Oleksandr. And if you celebrate Christmas on the 6th, then you should celebrate the New Year on the 14th," "Oh, fuck. And Christmas has already passed in Ukraine," "As if Christmas has passed in Ukraine!!! Only r*ssians have Christmas soon," the boxer was slammed in the comments.
Some users supported Oleksandr's words.
Earlier, Usyk's godfather Vasyl Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) on Wednesday, December 25, instead of Christmas, congratulated all Ukrainians on the day of remembrance of St. Spyridon of Trimython. According to the New Julian calendar, to which the OCU switched, this holiday is celebrated on December 12.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, in February 2019, the then absolute world heavyweight champion congratulated Ukrainians on February 23. The post on Instagram angered fans, who burst into angry comments.
The day before, Usyk visited the Holy Dormition Monastery in Odesa. The boxer was blessed by His Eminence Agafangel, Metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, on February 27, 2022, Usyk recorded a touching video in which he almost burst into tears while talking about the situation in the country. It was the first time the former heavyweight champion switched to Ukrainian, which was not typical for him.
