'Nothing good': world champion from Russian Federation who complained about Ukrainians whined over IOC president change

Shubenkov has spoken out about Coe

Russian track and field athlete Sergey Shubenkov has expressed confidence that the arrival of World Athletics head Sebastian Coe as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will not bring anything good to athletes from Russia. The 2015 world champion in hurdles, who cynically mocked Yaroslava Mahuchikh and complained about the Ukrainians, fears that the British functionary will permanently close the road for his compatriots to return to world sport.

Shuienkov said this in an interview with the propaganda news agency TASS. The 33-year-old Barnaul native called two-time Olympic champion Coe a cunning functionary and complained that World Athletics did not let Russians into the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris even in neutral status.

"Coe has said before that he wants to aspire to the post of IOC president. And if his wishes are realized, we will not have to wait for anything good. In any case, as long as the SWO (as Russia shamefully calls the war in Ukraine - ed.) is going on, nothing good will happen, and I think we will have to wait for normalization for a long time. Coe is, first of all, a politician who thinks first of his own interests. And he is very cunning, so cunning that it is hard to even imagine. If Coe becomes IOC president, he will not let us go for nothing," Shubenkov said.

Note that in late June, Coe visited Ukraine and met with President Vladimir Zelensky. "World Athletics has taken a very clear position on the admission of Russian and Belarus athletes - we said no. Not for the sake of politics, but because it would be unthinkable for their athletes to compete at a time when your athletes cannot do it properly and your coaches are not around," the Briton said at the time.
