Lomachenko unexpectedly given championship fight due to 'strange decision' by WBC
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has given the absolute lightweight champion of the world Devin Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) the status of "champion on vacation". According to Boxing News 24, the WBC is then going to sanction a fight for the vacant title between mandatory challenger Shakur Stevenson and Ukraine's number one ranked Vasyl Lomachenko.
If Vasya declines the championship fight, Stevenson's opponent will be No. 3 ranked Isaac Cruz.
Boxing News 24 columnists are calling it a "bizarre decision."
"Haney's demotion to 'champion on vacation' essentially means he's stripped of his WBC lightweight title. That's what it comes down to, Haney is no longer the champion, but he can fight for the belt against the next champion," the article said.
Shakur has already reacted to the development, addressing the Ukrainian boxer, "Champion, let's have a fight of the highest level."
Recall that on May 21, Loma held his 20th fight in the professional ring. The lightweight fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena against Devin Haynie went all 12 rounds and ended with a unanimous decision of the judges 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 in favor of the American.
Note that the judges' notes, which were published after the fight, caused a heated debate among experts and fans.
