Lavrov speaks of Russia's confident future and becomes a laughingstock online
During the opening ceremony of the second congress of the International Movement of Russophiles, the Russian Foreign Minister said that Russian sports is confident about the future. Sergey Lavrov believes that the isolation has not affected the country in any way, and Russia will organize major tournaments on its own.
"Despite the unprecedented politicization of the international sports movement, Russian sport is confident about the future. Our country is currently hosting a very interesting innovative tournament in Kazan called the Future Games with 161 teams from 109 countries. Other large-scale events are planned for the same year - the BRICS Games and the World Friendship Games," Lavrov said.
The diplomat's remarks provoked a strong reaction from his compatriots. Russians ridiculed Lavrov, calling him a storyteller.
"There is confidence in the future, he looks confidently into the future", "So the whole country is holding its breath and looking hopefully into the future with hope. Rumor has it that some have even "seen" some signals from there..." that perhaps we need to tighten our belts and be patient for another 25 years," the network writes.
Russian fans compare Russia's prospects in sports with a famous DiCaprio meme.
"Russian sport's view of the future is like a meme of DiCaprio's gaze from the movie Shutter Island," users note.
Sports fans from Russia laugh at the words about the popularity of the Future Games.
"The Future Games have been directly granted almost Olympic status. It's not a sport at all, to be honest," the Russians mock.
