Russian State Duma deputy Dmitry Svishchev has suggested that Donald Trump, who has become US president, could help Russian football. According to him, Trump is able to lobby for the participation of the Russian national team in the 2026 World Cup to be held in the United States.

However, the politician mentioned that this requires restoring trust between the countries and successfully passing the qualifying tournament.

Svishchev expressed hope that international organizations such as FIFA and UEFA would support the return of Russian football players to the world stage. For example, he cited the case of Wimbledon, when the organizers were punished for refusing to accept Russian and Belarusian tennis players.

The statement caused a flurry of criticism online. Users mocked the idea that Russian MPs were hoping for intervention from a foreign leader. Comments were caustic:
