Lopez Jr. criticised Lomachenko
Vasyl Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) of Ukraine made a mistake in his calculations during his fight against American Devin Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) on 20 May for the world lightweight title. The Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi native should have continued to be as active in the 12th round as he had been since the ninth three minutes.
This opinion was expressed by Lomachenko's former abuser Teofimo Lopez (19-1, 13 KOs) in an interview with the American TV channel ESPN. He stressed that, according to his calculations, the Ukrainian boxer still won the fight with Haney, but his passivity in the final round gave the referees a reason to award the victory to the American.
"Haney lost the fight with Lomachenko. Lomachenko's problem was that he slowed down in the 12th round because he thought he was going to win. He thought he had won the fight. And I know boxing. I've fought this guy and sparred with Devin. However, I knew it was the twelfth round that would decide everything, and Loma slowed down a bit there. Haney couldn't beat Lomachenko. He's a puppy. Why do we even hope for this guy..." - said Lopez Jr.
The fight ended with Haney's victory by unanimous decision, which caused a lot of controversy among fans and experts. Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) called it a robbery of the Ukrainian. American trainer and trainer Russ Anber said that he had watched the fight between Vasyl and Devin three times and gave the victory to Lomachenko each time.
And the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) deprived Lomachenko of the first place in its ranking. In turn, the Nevada State Athletic Commission fined Devin Haney $25,000 for pushing Vasyl Lomachenko.
