"Harsh disqualification": Russian Olympic champion outraged by Maguchikh's "Glory to Ukraine!" after World Cup victory
Two-time Olympic champion Dmitry Vasilyev expressed his indignation at Yaroslava Maguchikh, who shouted the patriotic cry "Glory to Ukraine!" after winning the World Athletics Championships. The former biathlete noted that our compatriot should have been punished for allegedly politicising the tournament in Budapest.
Vasilyev said this in an interview with the propaganda news agency RIA Novosti. He accused international sports federations of some kind of double standards and the fact that they do not react to the actions of Ukrainian athletes who glorify their country.
"At most, they will wag their finger to show that they have recorded everything, they need to save the remains of their face. But I think there will be absolutely nothing for this. Everything will be put on hold. They will tell everyone else that they shouldn't do this. But if someone from the wrong country does something like this, of course, there will be a severe disqualification with consequences. They are putting everything on the sick head. All these violations of rights, discrediting. At the same time, they are talking about democracy," the Russian said.
The day before, journalists from the Russian portal Sport24 demanded that Maguchikh be fined at least for chanting "Glory to Ukraine!" at the 2023 World Cup. And Olympic champion Svetlana Zhurova said that the athlete was allegedly being forced to "say nasty things" about Russian aggression.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Ukrainian long jumper Maria Bekh-Romanchuk won silver at the World Athletics Championships and brought our country its first medal of the tournament.
