Famous Ukrainian tennis player enrages Russian propagandists with her action in France
Ukrainian No. 4 Marta Kostyuk (WTA #39) did not play against Russian Mirra Andreeva (WTA #120) in the final of the Negometal Open de Bourg-de-Peage exhibition tournament, which was to take place in Bourg-de-Peage, southeastern France. Initially, the 21-year-old from Kyiv agreed to participate in the show, deciding to replace Donna Vekic from Croatia.
In an interview with BTU, Kostiuk explained her decision as "a good opportunity to try out the game rhythm" given that she had finished the season quite early. Marta also said that she was offered good conditions, thanks to which she "will have the opportunity to make a good contribution to our defenders."
However, a few hours before the match, the show's organizers published an announcement stating that French tennis player Janis Gasuani Durand (No. 845 ATP) would play with the 16-year-old Andreeva instead, citing the "geopolitical context in Ukraine" as a reason.
After that, the Russian propaganda media threw a real tantrum, accusing Kostyuk of being a "clown".
It's worth noting that Andreev vs Durand ended with a score of 7-5, 6-2 in favor of the local athlete.
As OBOZ.UA reported, Kostyuk recently showed off a new swimsuit. The Ukrainian tennis player married her boyfriend Georgy and went on a honeymoon to the Maldives.
On March 5, Kostiuk won her first Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tournament in her carrier. Marta dedicated her success to her home country and all Ukrainians.
