Concerning Harlan: Russia calls Russian seizure of power in FIE a gift to the world

Usmanov wants to return to FIE

Former Russian sports minister Pavel Kolobkov has called the nomination of oligarch Alisher Usmanov as its president a gift to the International Fencing Federation (FIE). The billionaire, who is close to Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin, has been heading the organization since 2008, when he decided to resign after the aggressor country's invasion of Ukraine.

In a commentary to propagandists from the Match TV channel, Kolobkov said that fencing, where Olga Harlan intends to continue to compete, is praying for Usmanov's return. According to the official, things are allegedly going badly for the FIE after the Russian's voluntary resignation, which has not been confirmed.

"This is a gift for the international federation. During the year and a half that Alisher Burkhanovich has not been involved in the affairs of the International Federation, the situation there has become very tense. Its management is degrading. Usmanov not only financed but also created a very strong and competitive federation. All federations compete with each other. If the International Federation doesn't vote for him, it will be the biggest mistake. I hope they will be smart enough to unanimously support him. He has the best chance of winning. I don't see any other alternatives," Kolobkov said.

Earlier, fencer from Ternopil Olena Kryvytska admitted that she often faces threats from Russians who remind her of her place of birth - Rostov.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Ukrainian fencer Yulia Bakastova will not boycott fights against Russian athletes at international tournaments.
