The photo found a new life on the Internet

On April 6, 1893, a record-breaking boxing match between Andy Bowen and Jack Burke took place in New Orleans. They fought for the title of the Southern States champion and a prize of $2500.

The fight lasted 110 rounds (7 hours and 19 minutes) and became the longest in history. Burke dominated the first rounds, but broke both hands, after which Bowen took the initiative. However, neither fighter was able to end the fight early.

By the 50th round, the audience started to leave, and by the 108th round, referee John Duffy warned that he would give two more rounds. In the 110th, no punches were thrown, and the fight was declared a no contest, awarding a draw. The prize money was divided equally.

After the fight, both boxers lost 5 kg each. Burke spent six weeks in the hospital with broken arms, and Bowen was back in action in a month.

This story took on a new life online after a photo generated by artificial intelligence was added to it.

"This is what the two boxers looked like after they had fought 110 rounds!" the caption read.

In less than a week, the post on social media gathered more than 8,000 reactions, 435 comments, and 1,400 users shared it on their pages.

It's worth noting that not all readers fell for this hoax. Many people joked off-screen that they were present at the fight or watched the live broadcast. Some pointed out the discrepancy between the anthropometry of the athletes and that of the computer-generated ones.
