29-year-old boxer bites his tongue days after a knockout and dies

Tanzanian boxer Hassan Mgaya has died on December 30, 2024, at the age of 29. The tragedy occurred three days after his fight with his compatriot Paul Elias, in which Mgaya lost by knockout, Metro writes.

The fight took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on December 27. After a series of heavy punches, Mgaya was knocked out. He suffered an airway spasm due after biting his tongue. The athlete was immediately given first aid and taken to Palestine Hospital, and then transferred to Mwananyamala Hospital, where he died.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) expressed its condolences in an official statement, "The entire WBC family and President Mauricio Sulaiman send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our beloved champion. Rest in Peace".

The family guardian and representative of Hassan Mgaya said that the boxer was to receive only 60,000 Tanzanian shillings, which is about 24 US dollars, for his last fight.

For Mgay, the fight with Elias was his ninth in a professional career that began with a 3-3-2 record. His death was the second such case in Tanzania in recent months. In November, boxer  died after being knocked out in a fight in Zanzibar.
