"This is the minimum": Zelensky says Ukraine needs at least 200,000 peacekeepers to prevent another Russian attack
President Volodymyr Zelensky has named the minimum number of peacekeeping troops that could prevent a new Russian attack. The Head of State noted that it is at least 200 thousand servicemen.
At the same time, there should be at least 800 thousand people in the Armed Forces. Zelensky said this at a briefing after his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to the president, at least 200,000 peacekeepers will be needed to prevent a new Russian attack after the ceasefire agreement is signed. Otherwise, the deployment of a peacekeeping contingent will not make any sense. In addition, the President noted that even such a force would be only a part of the security guarantees that Ukraine needs.
"I support the idea of contingents as part of security guarantees. Because if they have an army of one and a half million and if we have half that, it means that we need contingents with a very large number of soldiers. 200 thousand is the minimum. Otherwise, it is nothing. Otherwise, it's something, you know, like when we had the OSCE mission, and no one knew how it could help. They just had offices, and that's all," the President said.
At the same time, the head of state emphasized that 200,000 peacekeeping troops is a minimum, provided that the Russian army will have 1.5 million personnel, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine will have half of this number - 800,000.
As a reminder, Zelensky spoke about the possibility of deploying peacekeepers on the territory of Ukraine, emphasizing that this issue is currently being discussed with several key international partners, including France and Poland. However, Ukraine needs serious security guarantees.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysh is categorically against sending Polish troops to Ukraine. In his opinion, the border states should not do so; "there should be greater burden sharing and diversification within NATO."
Earlier it was reported that Germany does not reject the idea of sending its military to the future buffer zone in Ukraine in the event of the end of the war. However, they are ready to discuss this issue only when the time is right.
