Ukraine's fifth ranked player Dayana Yastremska (WTA No. 93) has reached the round of 16 of the Australian Open tennis tournament, which is taking place in Melbourne from January 12-26. In the third round of the Australian Open-2024, the 23-year-old from Odesa defeated 27th-seeded American Emma Navarro (WTA No. 26) in three sets - 6:2, 2:6, 6:1.

The beginning of the match went well for the Ukrainian. Yastremska easily took a 4-0 lead, simply crushing her opponent in the first set. After this success, Dayana relaxed, and it almost cost her the victory. Navarro simply demolished the Ukrainian tennis player with powerful serves. After losing the second set 0-4 in the opener, Yastremska was unable to return to the game in this game.

In the third set, the Ukrainian tennis player fully concentrated on serving, which was the key to success. Dayana served out four times, winning 10 out of 12 points on the first serve. In 30 minutes, Dayana brought the score to 5-1, where she realized her match ball on the second time.

In total, the match lasted 1 hour and 47 minutes, during which the Ukrainian served out 5 times, realized 5 out of 8 breaks, won 4 out of 7 breaks and made 35 unforced and 3 double faults.

After the victory, which was a repeat of her best result at Grand Slam tournaments, Yastremska left a message on camera, writing "Everything will be Ukraine."

Commenting on her success, the tennis player from Odesa admitted that in the second set she felt a pain in her neck that prevented her from concentrating.

"Before the third game, I told myself to pay less attention to my neck because it was distracting my attention from the game. I just told myself to have fun," Dayana said in a flash interview.

Yastremska will play 18th seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus (WTA No. 22), who beat Jelena Ostapenko (11) of Latvia in two sets the day before (6-1, 7-5), to reach the quarterfinals.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, on January 18, in the third round of the AO, Yastremska easily defeated Varvara Gracheva, a native of Moscow who has been playing under the French flag since last year (6-3, 6-2).

After that, Dayana refused to shake hands with her rival, who had previously represented Russia.
