Bread is one of the most popular foods in many people's diets. But choosing really high-quality and nutritious bread is not an easy task.

The Food Association's Instagram page explains how to do it right. They also explained the difference between multigrain and whole grain bread.

Multigrain or whole grain

The label "multigrain" means that the bread has been made from several types of grains. However, these grains may have been stripped of their hulls, i.e. refined. This indicates a lack of beneficial properties. Therefore, such bread does not differ from ordinary white bread in terms of its benefits.

But whole grain bread is the bread that retains all the useful microelements and uses only unrefined grains. Such bread helps to maintain a stable blood sugar level, provides a long-lasting feeling of satiety and promotes intestinal health.

Product composition

Don't rely on the front of the package. Just because a package depicts a beautiful wheat field does not necessarily mean that its contents are made from whole grains. The labels "multigrain", "7 grains", "unleavened", "whole grain" also do not always indicate quality bread.

Color

The color of bread is not a good indication of its quality. Dark bread is not always whole grain. Often, manufacturers add caramel or molasses to make it darker.

The amount of ingredients

Real healthy bread does not need a long list of additives.

Amount of sugar

Allowable - 1-2 g per 100 g of bread. If the package states that the bread contains more than 5 g of sugar per 100 g, it means that it contains added sugar (including syrups, fruit purees, molasses, honey).

Shelf life

Bread without preservatives cannot be stored for more than 5 days. If the package indicates a long shelf life, this may indicate the presence of artificial additives.
