World number one table tennis player Wang Chuqin of China has sensationally dropped out in the third round of the men's tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Chuqin unexpectedly lost to Truls Mjögård of Sweden with a score of 2:4.

A day earlier, the 24-year-old world number one had won gold in the mixed doubles with Sun Ying against rivals from North Korea, but then a journalist broke his main racket, forcing him to use a spare.

After seeing this, Wang admitted that he "lost control of his emotions a little bit."

When the Chinese tennis player recovered from his defeat, he said that the spare racket was useless and that his Swedish opponent simply played much better.

"It didn't really affect the match. My opponent just played very, very well," he told AFP.

Mjögård admitted that "he had a feeling that he could win" even though he had never managed to do so in eight previous attempts.

"I've almost never taken a set against Wang, so it's crazy to win here at the Olympics," said the Swede, who reached the last 16 for the first time.

Møregaard, who is coached by his older brother Malte, said Wang was not in the best shape, but added that it had nothing to do with the racket.

"I think you have at least 10 racquets and 500 pads here, so it doesn't matter if you lose your equipment. I mean, I don't know which one is my first or third, so it doesn't matter," the Swede added.
