The musical with Jennifer Lopez received the best reviews of her film career: what is known about "Kiss of the Spider Woman"

For three decades in Hollywood, Jennifer Lopez has failed to earn a reputation as a good actress - she has more Golden Raspberry nominations than Golden Globes. However, it seems that she has finally managed to make a breakthrough in her film career.
Recently, the Sundance Independent Film Festival premiered a musical thriller directed by Bill Condon, Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring J.Lo. According to the Movieweb, the film received rave reviews.
The film is based on a Broadway musical first staged in 1993, which in turn was based on the novel of the same name by Manuel Puig. In the story, during the Argentine Dirty War of 1976-1983, a gay hairdresser Luis Molina (Tonatiu Elizarraraz) is imprisoned. He was sentenced to eight years for allegedly molesting minors.

In order to cope with the horrors of imprisonment, the hero invents movies starring a non-existent actress Ingrid Luna (Jennifer Lopez). One of her roles is that of a spider woman who can kill her victims with a kiss. However, Luis's fate changes dramatically when political prisoner Arregui Paz (Diego Luna) is assigned to his cell.
Deadline film critic Pete Hammond called Lopez's work "the role she was born to play". And he characterized the film itself as a perfect embodiment of the spirit of a Broadway musical on the big screen.
In turn, David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter noted that J.Lo's inspired work on the screen pulls the whole movie out. And the actress herself is fully committed to the image and copes with the tasks set before her.
It should be noted that this is not the first film adaptation of Manuel Puig's novel. In 1985, the United States and Brazil jointly released a film adaptation, which was directed by Hector Babenko, a Brazilian of Ukrainian descent. The film was nominated for 4 Oscars and 4 Golden Globes, and William Hurt, who played William Molina, won a BAFTA award and an acting award at the Cannes Film Festival.
It is not yet known when Bill Condon's film with Jennifer Lopez will be released. At the moment, the movie doesn't even have an official trailer. However, given the success of Kiss of the Spider Woman at Sundance, we should expect it to appear in theaters by the end of this year.
It is worth noting that this is not Condon's first experience with adapting Broadway musicals to the big screen. He wrote and directed the successful movie Dreamgirls, and was a screenwriter for the Oscar-winning Chicago and The Greatest Showman.
