The first ever molecular atlas of brain vessels has been created: it will help in the treatment of tumors and stroke
A group of scientists has managed to create an atlas of the human brain circulatory system, which will help in the treatment of tumors and stroke in the future. This scheme covers the period from early development to adulthood and includes changes caused by various brain diseases.
The molecular atlas allows you to look into every cell of the brain. It is reported by MedicalXpress portal .
An international consortium of scientists led by the University Health Network in Toronto and the University of Zurich found that endothelial cells, which provide vascular reactivity by narrowing and interacting with blood flow to surrounding tissues, behave differently depending on a person's age.
The researchers also found that the brain's vascular system, including blood vessel cells and genes, is important for the proper functioning of healthy early developmental and adult brains, as well as for various brain diseases such as tumors, stroke, and malformations of the brain's blood vessels.
Corresponding author of the study, Dr. Thomas Welkley, noted that this development will expand the understanding of the normal functioning of the human brain vascular system and open the door to future treatments.
According to scientists, these cells may play a more important role in human health than previously thought. In particular, the researchers showed the difference between the vascular system of the brain and other organs. They also observed that after the onset of a disease, the blood flow in the brain becomes more similar to the vascular system of the sensory organs.
The researchers noted that this discovery makes it possible to further study the blood vessels of the brain and their interaction with the immune system, as well as the pattern of tumor growth in this organ.
As a reminder, a new study has shown that brain size does not increase in proportion to body size in large animals. Therefore, scientists refuted the most common myth.
