More than a million dollars: Joshua's promoter shared how Lomachenko "set him up"
British promoter Eddie Hearn has admitted that he suffered losses of more than a million dollars during the organization of the fight between Vasyl Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) and Luke Campbell (20-4, 16 KOs) in August 2019. The head of Matchroom Boxing noted that he did not take into account the commercial value of the Ukrainian boxer.
Hearn said this in an interview with The Overlap YouTube channel, Boxing Social reports. The promoter of Anthony Joshua (25-3, 22 KOs) emphasized that he succumbed to emotions after his heavyweight loss to Andy Ruiz (35-2, 22 KOs) and that people started talking of his company's collapse.
"We're talking about the fight between Vasyl Lomachenko, who was like a boxing god at the time, and Luke Campbell, who we represented and who was the Olympic champion. I just spent too much on the fight. I wanted to bring Lomachenko to London, I was in love with him as a fighter, but I didn't quite understand his commercial value. Everything went very well, we sold out the stadium, but the broadcast purchases didn't reach the numbers we needed, and we had a big hole. Probably a million pounds," Hearn said.
It should be noted that Lomachenko defeated Campbell by a unanimous decision of the judges, who recorded the defeat of the British with the score of 119:108, 119:108, 118:109.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Vasyl Lomachenko reacted to the decision of the Verkhovna Rada to ban religious organizations in Ukraine associated with Russia.
