Hero of the Olympics. A track and field athlete from Bhutan almost finished the marathon on foot, losing an hour and a half to the champion. Video
Bhutanese runner Kinzang Lhamo has become a real heroine of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The 26-year-old athlete finished 80th and last in the marathon (42 km), an hour and a half behind the winner (Dutchwoman of Ethiopian origin Sifan Hassan).
As Lhamo, the only woman on the Bhutanese team and the flag bearer for her country at the opening ceremony, crossed the finish line, she was cheered on by the whole of Paris.
It is worth noting that at certain points of the course the Bhutanese athlete had to walk, but she did not give up and still finished the race with a time of 3:52:59.
Lhamo specializes in ultra-marathons. In 2024, she was granted a universal license to represent Bhutan in the marathon at the Olympic Games. It was her first competition outside her home country. In preparation for the event, Lhamo trained in Thimphu with the help of the Bhutan Amateur Sports Federation.
For reference: Bhutan is a state in South Asia in the Himalayas, located between India and China. The population as of 2017 is 760,000 people.
Ukraine was not represented in the women's marathon. The longest distance of the 2024 Olympic Games, where Ukrainian women competed, was the mixed marathon relay. Ivan Banzeruk and Liudmyla Olyanovska finished in 17th place.
