From compote to kvass: what drinks Soviet people loved

In the USSR, people escaped from the heat not only by diving into ponds and the famous Soviet ice cream but also by a variety of cooling drinks.

FoodOboz tells you what kind of drinks the people of the USSR liked and how they were sold. Sometimes people didn't even think about hygiene when drinking them at all.

Compotes

Housewives often pampered their families with compotes, for which they used apples, apricots and cherries. They even canned them so that they didn't have to buy ready-made ones in winter. Another popular drink was uzvar, which is made from dried fruit.

Kvass

Kvass was sold on the street, where it was poured from huge white and yellow barrels. The sellers tried to pour the kvass as quickly as possible so that a lot of foam would get into the glass or jar. This way they could earn extra money.

Soda

You could also see soda machines on the streets of cities. And since disposable tableware did not exist back in those days, everyone drank water from the same glass, having previously rinsed it under running water.

Store soda

Baikal, Duchess, and Cream Soda were the most popular packaged carbonated drinks of the USSR. Everyone chose their favorite flavor and bought bottles as soon as possible. Juices canned in three-liter jars were also sold.
