French champion collapses during 2024 Olympics final. Video
French 10,000 meter champion Alessia Zarbo (2020) collapsed on the track during the women's 10,000 meter final at the Paris Olympics. The 22-year-old winner of the 2017 Youth Olympic Games lost consciousness a few laps before the finish line.
As her rivals rounded the corner to complete the 21st lap of 25 at around the 26th minute of the race, viewers could see medical personnel treating Alessia on lanes three and four.
The moment of the athlete's fall was not shown. The broadcast included her rivals running past Zarbo before the medical team lifted her off the track and carried her away on a stretcher.
France's RMC Sport reports that Zarbo is "feeling better and recovering" after the race. She herself did not give any interviews. Another runner, Rahel Daniel from Eretria, dropped out of the race after taking a brief lead in the early stages of the 10,000-meter race.
Beatrice Chebet of Kenya won the race with a time of 30 minutes 43.25 seconds, adding a second Paris 2024 gold to her title in the 5,000 meters.
