Harlan won the first medal for Ukraine at the Olympics

Ukrainian fencer Olga Harlan has brought Ukraine its first medal at the 2024 Olympic Games, which are currently taking place in Paris. In the bronze medal match in the sabre tournament, our compatriot defeated Korean Choi Sibae with a minimum score of 15:14.

The 33-year-old native of Mykolaiv had a bad first half of the fight. She let her opponent go for five shots at once. After a one-minute break, the Korean even gained an 11-6 advantage.

This meant that Harlan's opponent only had to make four accurate shots to close the fight. However, Olga demonstrated all her skills and character. With a spurt of seven effective attacks, our saber fencer not only caught up with her opponent, but also took the lead.

The end of the duel turned into a battle of nerves. With the score at 14:13 in her favor, Harlan seemed to have struck an accurate shot, but the judges, after watching the replay, gave the point to Siben.

In the end, Olga won by one point. Here is the video of this heroic comeback.

This is Harlan's fifth medal at the fourth Olympic Games. Before that, she won gold in Beijing 2008, bronze in London 2012, and bronze and silver in Rio 2016.
