Buckwheat is one of the most popular side dishes, but it's not always easy to cook it so that the porridge turns out crumbly and flavorful. Often, even experienced housewives face the fact that the cereal becomes too soft or sticks together. However, there are some simple secrets that will help you achieve the perfect consistency.
The FoodOboz editorial team will tell you how to cook buckwheat properly, and what to add during cooking. You will find simple tricks that will make your side dish a real culinary masterpiece.
How to cook buckwheat to make it crumbly
1. Prepare the cereal. Before cooking, rinse buckwheat thoroughly in several waters to remove dust and debris. If you have any doubts about the quality of the groats, toast them in a dry frying pan for 3-5 minutes – this will give the buckwheat a rich flavor and help to maintain a crumbly texture.
2. The right proportion of water. To achieve optimal consistency, it is important to observe the ratio of cereal to water:
For 1 cup of buckwheat, use 2 cups of water for a denser, crumbly porridge. If you prefer a softer porridge, increase the amount of water to 2.5-3 cups.
3. Cooking process. Put the buckwheat in a saucepan with thick walls, cover it with cold water, and put it on medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, add half a teaspoon of salt, and cover the pan with a lid. Cook for 20-25 minutes without stirring the cereal. This is important because mixing can destroy the structure of buckwheat and make it sticky.
4. Butter is the secret to juiciness. After the buckwheat is cooked, add a piece of butter (about 20-30 grams). Stir, cover the pan with a lid, and wrap it in a towel. When warm, the groats will "come through" and become flavorful, tender, and juicy.
5. Drying before cooking. As already mentioned, buckwheat will become more crumbly if it is dried a little in a dry frying pan.
6. Use high-quality cookware. A pan with thick walls distributes heat evenly, which prevents burning.
7. Avoid unnecessary ingredients. Do not add extra spices or fat during cooking – this can change the texture of the cereal.
