Ukraine's top tennis player refused to play at the US Open and withdrew from the doubles tournament
Ukraine's top-ranked tennis player Marta Kostiuk has withdrawn from the US Open doubles. Together with Romanian tennis player Elena-Gabriela Ruse, the 22-year-old from Kyiv was supposed to play in the second round of the US Open against third-seeded Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic and Taylor Townsend of the United States.
At the time of the news, the reasons for her refusal to play were unknown.
The day before, Marta Kostiuk (WTA #19) lost to local tennis player Emma Navarro (WTA #12) in the third round of the US Open singles tournament, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6.
Elena-Gabriela Ruse also lost her match in the round of 16. The 26-year-old native of Bucharest lost in three sets to Paula Badosi.
For the first time in history, seven Ukrainian tennis players played in the main draw of the US Open, setting a historic record.
It should be noted that the best result for our tennis players at the US Open is the semifinals - in 2019, Svitolina reached it. A year earlier, Tsurenko played in the quarterfinals.
A few days ago, Kostiuk impressed Instagram users with her athletic beauty. The well-known culture.tennis account posted a short video with the best moments of the Ukrainian's game, collecting a lot of enthusiastic comments under it.
