Peas are a popular and healthy product that is widely used in cooking. They are added to soups, purees, salads, and various snacks. However, many housewives face the problem of long boiling, because peas can remain hard even after an hour on the stove. To avoid this, you need to know a few simple but important cooking rules.

The FoodOboz editorial team will tell you how to cook peas quickly. They will turn out soft and crumbly.

The main factors affecting the cooking speed

Type of peas – whole peas take longer to cook than split peas.

Soaking – significantly reduces the cooking time.

Cooking method – in a saucepan, multicooker, or pressure cooker.

Adding salt – add it at the end to avoid slowing down the softening process.

How to cook peas correctly

The classic method (with soaking). Rinse the peas several times under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak in water (for 8-10 hours or overnight). To speed up the process, you can pour boiling water over them for 1-2 hours. Drain the water and pour fresh water in a ratio of 1:3 (one part peas to three parts water). Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and cook:

  • whole – 1-1.5 hours
  • split peas – 45-60 minutes.

Do not salt immediately – add salt only at the end of cooking.

If you don't have time to soak, you can use this method:

Rinse the peas under running water. Cover with cold water (1:4) and bring to a boil. When the water boils, add a teaspoon of baking soda or pour in a glass of boiling water to help soften the peas. Cook over medium heat, skimming off the foam.

Cooking time without soaking:

  • split peas – 1-1.5 hours.
  • whole peas – up to 2 hours.

Additional ways to speed up cooking:

  • Use a pressure cooker to cook peas in just 20-30 minutes.
  • Adding baking soda – 0.5 teaspoon per liter of water will speed up softening.
  • Changing the water – after 30 minutes of cooking, drain the hot water and add boiling water.
