How to chop onions and not cry: an elementary life hack that will suit everyone
Slicing onions is one of the most unpleasant processes in the kitchen, as almost everyone has experienced tears during this procedure. This happens because of the substances that onions release when they are cut –- they irritate the eyes and cause tearing. But there is a simple and effective way to help you forget about this problem.
Blogger Diana Holohovets shared how you can quickly chop onions without crying on her Instagram page. You don't need special glasses or a fan – just regular vegetable oil is enough. This method is suitable for everyone and will make the cooking process much more comfortable.
How to chop onions without tears using oil:
1. Prepare the knife. Take a sharp kitchen knife – this is important because a sharp blade damages the onion cells less, which means fewer tear-inducing substances are released.
2. Oil the blade. Put a few drops of vegetable oil (sunflower or olive) on the knife and spread it evenly over the entire surface of the blade. This will create a protective layer that prevents the evaporation of irritants.
3. Start slicing. Hold the knife close to the onion and slice with quick, steady movements. Thanks to the oil coating, the release of caustic juice will be minimal.
4. Refresh the oil layer as needed. If you are cutting a large amount of onions, periodically re-oil the knife to keep the life hack working effectively.
5. Enjoy a comfortable work environment. This simple method will keep your eyes dry and make cooking much more enjoyable.
