Homemade cabbage rolls in tomato sauce: how to cook them properly. Recipe

Stuffed cabbage is a traditional Ukrainian dish made from minced meat and rice wrapped in a specially prepared cabbage leaf. Every housewife has her own recipe for this main dish, which is the favorite of her family.

Famous chef Liza Hlinska also cooks cabbage rolls at home. On Instagram, she shared a detailed recipe for their preparation, which you should take note of.

Ingredients

  • Cabbage – 3-3.5 kg
  • Minced beef – 500 g
  • Rice – 150 gr
  • Wate– 350 ml
  • Onions – 4 pcs
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Oil

Ingredients for the filling

  • Tomatoes in their own juice – 300 gr
  • Carrots – 2 pcs
  • Onions – 2 pcs
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Sugar

Method of preparation

1. Put the rice in a saucepan, cover it with water, salt, and cook for 15 minutes at a low temperature with the lid closed. Then turn off the stove and leave the rice under the lid until it cools completely.

2. Peel and chop the onion into small cubes.

3. Fry the onion in vegetable oil, it should be lightly browned.

4. Take the cabbage and make deep circle cuts in the center. Then, pierce the cabbage head with a fork.

5. Pour water into a large saucepan, bring it to a boil, and immerse the cabbage in it.

6. After 2-3 minutes, the outer leaves of the cabbage will be soft and well separated from the head of the cabbage. Take the cabbage apart.

7. Dip the cabbage leaves, 5-6 pieces at a time, in the water in which they were cooked for 1-2 minutes to make them soft.

8. Combine the minced meat, rice and onion. Season with salt and pepper and mix well.

9. Cut the cabbage leaf lengthwise and remove the hard center.

10. Take a small amount of minced meat, place it on the edge of the leaf, roll the leaf into a cone, and tuck the edge in.

11. Lay cabbage scraps on the bottom of the pan and place the cabbage rolls in a circle in several rows.

12. Prepare the filling. Cut the carrots into strips and the onion into small cubes.

13. Fry the onions and carrots in vegetable oil. Add salt and stir.

14. Add the tomatoes in their own juice and stir.

15. Pour the dressing over the cabbage rolls.

16. Pour boiling water over the cabbage rolls to cover them completely. If the tomatoes are sour, add a little sugar to the water.

17. To prevent the cabbage rolls from rising, cover them with a plate and press down.

18. Cook the cabbage rolls for 40-50 minutes at medium temperature.
