The first remnants of starch grains have been found in grinding tools from more than 30 years ago. This is a confirmation of the fact that Stone Age cooks most likely prepared the first interpretations of pancakes using hot stone.
So, for example, in 1991, in the Italian Alps, the remains of a man dated to 3275 BC were found. Tools were found next to him, according to which scientists came to the conclusion that this person enjoyed pancakes with a rather exotic filling - rhino and red deer meat. And in ancient Rome, honey was the most popular filling for pancakes. According to the Smithsonian magazine, the first recorded mention of pancakes dates back to the times of Ancient Greece, approximately 500 BC.
The Victorian era is considered to be the beginning of the total love for pancakes, made according to the recipe we know today. Since the 1800s, milk and cream have become very popular products, which has led to an increase in demand for pancakes themselves. And 80 years later, maple syrup was introduced, which immediately gained great popularity, especially when combined with pancakes.
