Ukraine is not facing a food shortage. Moreover, the 2023 harvest will be enough not only to meet the country's domestic needs but also to sell abroad.

This was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. He noted that Ukrainian farmers have already harvested 16.6 million tonnes of grain. The leaders are two southern regions:

  • Mykolaiv and Odesa;
  • Odesa region.

"Behind these figures of millions of tonnes of grain is the daily hard work of tens of thousands of people who often risk their lives. [But] we already clearly understand that there will be enough food for Ukraine's domestic needs and for export," the Prime Minister said.

He also emphasised: Ukraine intends to continue to play the role of "one of the key guarantors of global food security". However, it needs the help of its partners to do so:

  • more air defence to "better cover our ports, especially the Danube port cluster";
  • sustainable land logistics routes with high capacity.

What about food prices

Meanwhile, prices for borscht set vegetables in Ukraine have reached the bottom line. We are talking about:

  • potatoes
  • onions
  • cabbage
  • carrots
  • beetroot.

Ivan Stefanyshyn, advisor to the director of agriculture at the Shuvar wholesale agricultural market, told OBOZREVATEL that prices have dropped even compared to the beginning of August last year. The reason is an oversupply of basic vegetables.

"A lot of borscht set has been planted and there is no demand for it - the supply is too high. This shows the instability of our production and the desire to make a lot of money in a day. The situation is great for the population, but for the producer it is catastrophic," Stefanyshyn said.

Earlier, OBOZREVATEL reported that the forecasts of the expected shortage of watermelons in Ukraine also did not come true. At the end of July, prices for melons also began to decline, falling from UAH 30 to UAH 18-24 per kilogram in the markets and from UAH 35 to UAH 27-28 in supermarkets. Experts say this is not the end of the price drop.
